Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

SMARTER BALANCED TECHNOLOGY READINESS TOOL

The Smarter Balanced Technology Readiness Tool (TRT) is a survey of very high value to local educational agencies (LEAs) and the state. This communication is to encourage you to complete the TRT or update it if there have been changes to your technology inventory since you last submitted your survey. By completing the TRT, we believe you will be in the best position possible to make informed decisions on how to leverage Common Core implementation funds, how to address integrated technology plan decisions, and how to structure critical internal interdepartmental conversations about those topics.

LEAs that participate in the TRT are able to generate school-level readiness reports for their devices and networks. They are then able to use these reports locally for funding opportunities or to justify spending decisions. Additionally, the state and county offices of education are able to readily identify gaps in network coverage or network underperformance (if they exist) for the benefit of all schools in that region or area. These LEA readiness reports, along with regional network performance reports, will provide a strong foundation for determining overall readiness and capacity for deployment of the Smarter Balanced Field Test in Spring 2014.

We encourage you to submit your data through the TRT by December 13, 2013. On that date, a data “snapshot” will be taken of all schools in California and reported nationally. We hope that you will take advantage of the many resources created by the California Department of Education (CDE) staff, such as Frequently Asked Questions, training modules, data collection specifications, Webinars, and more. These resources are posted on the CDE Smarter Balanced TRT Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/sbac-itr-index.asp.

If you have any questions regarding the TRT, please contact Jose Ortega, State Readiness Coordinator, Education Technology Office, by phone at 916-323-5715 or by e-mail at sbac-itreadiness@cde.ca.gov.

Sincerely,

TOM TORLAKSON
