State Schools Chief Jack O'Connell Appoints Sacramento
Parent to Reading First Advisory Panel

SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell announced today the appointment of Nina Mancina of Sacramento to the Reading First Advisory Panel. Mancina is a self-employed grant writer and parent.

"Nina Mancina's dedication and tireless volunteer work for disadvantaged children will be a major asset in helping our students learn to read," said O'Connell.

Reading First is a component of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002. The Reading First Advisory Panel focuses on establishing quality, comprehensive reading instruction for students in kindergarten through grade three. Studies show that building a solid foundation in reading at very early ages helps students learn in all subject areas throughout their academic career. Reading First grants help train teachers and administer classroom assessments to help teachers monitor and improve student achievement in reading skills. Funds also provide professional development for special education teachers, kindergarten through grade 12.

"I think that the knowledge I have gained as a parent and school volunteer enhances my participation on the Reading First Advisory Panel," said Mancina. "I look forward to serving on the Panel."

Mancina has a great interest in the welfare of children and volunteers her time to help homeless and runaway teens. Since 1982, she worked as a health educator, project coordinator, volunteer, and grant writer in Los Angeles and Sacramento. Mancina is the parent of two children in the 5th and 9th grades.
