Schools Chief Jack O'Connell Comments on Budget
Negotiations Affecting California's Teachers
SACRAMENTO — In response to state budget negotiations proposing to eliminate an income tax break worth $125 million for California's teachers Jack O'Connell stated, "I am extremely disappointed that budget negotiators appear to be putting at risk an important benefit for California's teachers. Taking away a tax incentive from professionals who do one of California's most important jobs while receiving such low pay to begin with would send the wrong signals about our priorities as a state. I hope that the Governor and state legislators will not look to balance the budget on the back of our state's most important asset — our teachers."
