State Schools Chief Jack O'Connell Announces Sponsored
Bill to Improve Training for School Principals Signed into Law

Measure to Require Reporting of Teacher Salary by School Also Signed

LOS ANGELES — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today announced that two key measures that he supported this legislative session were signed by the Governor: AB 430 by Assembly Member Pedro Nava (D-Santa Barbara), and SB 687 by Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto).

AB 430, a bill sponsored by O'Connell, reauthorizes and expands the Principal Training Program to provide professional development and support to school principals in California. The program, renamed “The Administrator Training Program,” will be extended until 2012. It will include training on instruction of students with disabilities and English language learners.

"A strong principal is the key to a well-run, high-achieving school," O'Connell said. "I am so pleased that this program will continue to offer high-quality professional development to our school leaders."

Governor Schwarzenegger also signed into law SB 687, a measure O'Connell supported, designed to bring more transparency into the allocation of education funds per school by requiring districts to include the salaries of personnel on the School Accountability Report Card.

"It is important that the public has as much information as possible about how each precious education dollar is spent," O'Connell said. "I hope that this spotlight on the distribution of funds for teacher salaries will encourage school districts to employ well-trained and experienced teachers at schools that need them the most."
