State Schools Chief Invites Public Input on Instructional
Resources for Math, Reading/Language Arts, Foreign Language

SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell announced today that the instructional materials for kindergarten through eighth grade selected for follow-up adoption consideration by the State Board of Education (SBE) are now available for public review.

"This is a great opportunity for parents, educators, and all those interested in the textbooks used by California’s students to examine the materials and pass on their opinions to the State Board of Education," O’Connell said. "Once selected, these will be added to the current adoption list in each subject."

Follow-up adoptions generally occur two to three years after the primary adoption in each subject and use the same evaluation criteria as the primary adoption. Follow-up adoptions held in 2005 will expand the current primary adoption lists. Each adoption list, including both the programs originally adopted and those added by the follow-up adoption, will expire on the date indicated below.

  • Reading/Language Arts/English Language Development Primary Adoption held in 2002. List expires June 30, 2008.
  • Mathematics Primary Adoption held in 2001. List expires June 30, 2007.
  •  Foreign Language Primary Adoption held in 2003. List expires June 30, 2012.

The materials submitted for the follow-up adoption have been evaluated by members of the Instructional Materials Advisory Panels (IMAP) and Content Review Panels (CRP), which include classroom teachers, other educators, and content experts. The materials under consideration have been on display since April 2005 at Learning Resources Display Centers (LRDCs) located throughout the state. The Curriculum Development and Supplemental Materials Commission today released the list of materials it would be recommending to the SBE for adoption. The list of recommended materials and a list of the LRDCs (also available at: Learning Resource Display Centers - Curriculum Frameworks & Instructional Materials) are attached. You may view these instructional materials and submit your comments on forms available at your local LRDC.

The SBE, which adopts instructional materials for grades K-8, is scheduled to take action on September 7-8, 2005. Comments must be received by August 31, 2005 in order for them to be considered by the SBE.

Individuals also have the opportunity, whether or not they have completed public comment forms, to present their concerns at a public hearing of the SBE on September 7, 2005. The public hearing of the SBE marks the conclusion of the review for the instructional materials submitted for the 2005 Follow-Up Adoptions for Grades K-8.
