State Schools Chief Jack O'Connell Recognizes
12 Outstanding Continuation High Schools

SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today named 12 California schools as 2008 Model Continuation High Schools for their outstanding programs designed to help at-risk students stay in school. The list is attached.

"A student dropping out of school is a tragedy that could lead to a lifetime of disappointment and missed opportunities," said O'Connell. "These 12 continuation high schools have great programs that help students work with their individual challenges so they can complete their high school education that can lead to better opportunities in life, college, or careers."

A continuation high school is a program created in 1919 that is geared toward career technical education, uses exemplary instructional strategies, offers students guidance, counseling services, and more flexible school schedules to meet their needs. Continuation high schools serve students aged 16 years or older who are at risk of not graduating. Currently, more than 71,000 students in the state attended 519 continuation high schools in 2006-07, the latest data available.

The Model Continuation High School Recognition Program is a partnership of the California Department of Education and the California Continuation Education Association that identifies and recognizes outstanding programs and creates a resource list of quality programs for school visitations. Eligible applicants for the recognition must be accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and demonstrate exemplary program effectiveness, school management, curriculum, instructional strategies, assessment and evaluation, education climate, and guidance and counseling. As part of the application for recognition, parents, students, and community members were required to submit narrative statements supporting their respective schools. Thirteen schools applied for the recognition. A review team visited the schools and recommended 12 for model school status.

The selected schools retain their title for three years and must submit an annual assurance of compliance with model school guidelines in order to maintain the designation. The 12 schools join 62 previously designated Model Continuation High Schools for a total of 74 Model Continuation High Schools in the state.
