SACRAMENTO – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today congratulated Long Beach Unified School District on being named a national finalist for the prestigious 2008 Broad Prize for Urban Education. This is the fourth time that the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation has selected Long Beach Unified as a finalist for the prize that honors urban school districts for making the greatest progress in raising student achievement.
Long Beach Unified won the Broad Prize in 2003 and has been a finalist every year it has been eligible for the award.
"This is a tremendous recognition that the dedicated teachers and administrators of Long Beach have earned not once, but four times," O'Connell said. "I am so proud of the amazing results this district has achieved. Long Beach Unified is a leader in meeting and exceeding the high expectations we hold for students and schools in this demanding and complex time."
Long Beach was chosen a finalist this year after the Broad review board found it outperformed other California districts serving students with similar income levels in reading and math at all grade levels. It is among five districts nationwide so honored Tuesday by the Los Angeles-based philanthropic organization.
