State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Statement on Veterans Day
SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today urged families and schools to take time to honor our nation’s veterans on November 11, 2011.
"The Americans who have served our country, and those on active duty around the world, deserve our respect and our thanks for their service and their sacrifices for the cause of freedom and liberty, which serves as the foundation of public education in California and throughout the nation," Torlakson said. "I urge students, teachers, and families to take time to learn and reflect on the contributions of these extraordinary Americans."
All students in California start learning in kindergarten that history relates to events, people, and places of other times. Their studies help them identify the purpose of, and the people and events honored in commemorative holidays, including Veterans Day.
