State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Appoints New Administrator
for South Monterey County Joint Union High School District
SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today announced the appointment of Daniel Moirao, Ed.D., as State Administrator of the South Monterey County Joint Union High School District (formerly King City).
John Bernard, Ed.D., who has served as State Administrator since the District received a state emergency loan of $13 million in July 2009, will be leaving at the end of the month to pursue other education-related endeavors.
Moirao has been the Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services/Human Resources at the District since 2010, and brings years of experience in California in the positions of district superintendent, assistant superintendent, principal, and teacher.
"We are fortunate to have just the right person to build on the successful work of Dr. Bernard," Torlakson said. "The continuity in this transition of administrators helps keep the students on track and headed for success.
"I also want to recognize the dedication and successful efforts of Dr. Bernard to improve the district’s overall academic achievement, while working under difficult constraints to correct an out-of-balance budget and facing continued reductions to school funding at the state level. I am confident Dr. Moirao will ensure the continued success of students, and lead the District toward the return of local control."
