State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Issues
Statement on 40th Anniversary of Title IX
SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson issued the following statement today on the upcoming 40th anniversary of the passage of Title IX, the landmark federal legislation that prohibited discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal funding—including athletics:
"The 40th anniversary of Title IX marks not only a win for female athletes—but for anyone who believes in demonstrating fairness, encouraging talent, and rewarding hard work. As a father, teacher, coach, runner, and elected official, I have seen firsthand the effect that athletic participation has on not only young people's health and physical fitness, but on their academic success and self-esteem. We have undoubtedly come a long way in the past 40 years, but we must redouble our efforts to truly level the playing field in athletic participation and scholarships for all our kids."
