Purpose
The State Superintendent's High School Summit is an opportunity for participants to discuss how to raise expectations for all students by providing a rigorous and relevant standards-based curriculum. On leaving the summit, participants will have received information about and had the opportunity to discuss:
- State Superintendent Jack O'Connell's High Performing High Schools Initiative.
- The most recent research about high-achieving high schools.
- Promising practices of high schools that have obtained excellent results.
Keynote speakers
Bill Daggett, founder of the International Center for Leaders in Education, will discuss raising expectations for all students by combining the concepts of rigor and relevance.
Kati Haycock, Director of the Education Trust (Washington, D.C.), will focus on closing the achievement gap and will feature California-specific achievement data.
Featured speakers
Kylene Beers, Senior Reading Researcher at Yale University's Comer School Development Program, will focus on strategies to help struggling readers in the secondary grades.
Gene Bottoms, founding director of the Southern Regional Education Board's High Schools That Work, will discuss proven strategies to promote secondary school improvement.
Larry Gloeckler, former New York State Deputy Commission of Vocational and Special Education, will address improving high school outcomes, including graduation rates, for students with disabilities.
Joe Johnson, former director of Student Achievement and School Accountability in the U.S. Department of Education and now special assistant to the Ohio Superintendent of Schools, will focus on key high school leadership issues.
Hilda Quiroz, Program Developer and Trainer for the National School Safety Center, will focus on important high school safety topics, including bullying, hate-bias crimes, team building, and respect for cultural diversity.
Doug Reeves, chairman and founder of the Center for Performance Assessment, will address the importance of professional learning communities and their impact on achievement and equity.
Mary Catherine Swanson, founder and executive director of Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), will discuss strategies to prepare educationally disadvantaged high school students for college.
Chauncey Veatch, 2002 California and National Teacher of the Year, will emphasize the critical role of literacy in students' academic and career success and commitment to lifetime learning.
Focus
The focus of the summit is on raising expectations for all high school students. Sessions and speakers will provide high school information organized generally around five strands: Leadership; Curriculum; Instruction and Assessment; Professional Learning Communities; Intervention and Support Services for Students; and Structure, Size, and Time.
Anticipated starting time, October 25, 2004, at 9:30 a.m.; ending October 26, 2004, at 3:00 p.m.
Target Audience
The target audience for the summit is superintendents, school board members, administrators, teachers, counselors, support staff, county office personnel, university and community college faculty, and business leaders.
Registration, Confirmation and Cancellations
Registration. Please register early by mail or fax. Space is limited; onsite registration may not be possible. No meals are included in the registration fee.
Confirmation. A confirmation notice will be sent by e-mail.
Cancellations. Cancellations must be received in writing by October 11, 2004, and are subject to a $25 fee. Substitutions, but no refunds, are allowed after October 11, 2004.
