State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson and Special
Guests Help Collect Food for the Less Fortunate
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, Santa and Mrs. Claus, and the Rivercats' Dinger will be standing curb side outside the California Department of Education (CDE) building at 1430 N Street early Tuesday morning in Sacramento to greet passersby and to collect enough nonperishable foods to fill 10 barrels.
"Santa and Mrs. Claus, Dinger, and I are asking everyone to look into their cupboards to see if they can spare a few cans of food to help those less fortunate this holiday season," said Torlakson. "Sacramento-area families have endured several years of tough economic times, so this food will help fight hunger for thousands of children, seniors, and families."
The CDE holds a food drive each year that is part of the annual California State Employees' Food Drive [http://www.fooddrive.ca.gov/]
. The event is sponsored by the California Department of Food and Agriculture in partnership with the California Emergency Foodlink [http://www.cafoodlink.org/]
. Since 2002, the CDE collected $159,131 and 414,172 pounds of food for families in need.
The CDE invites local television stations to cover the event live during their morning newscasts. Torlakson and Dinger will be available between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Dinger will be passing out thank you gifts, while supplies last, to people who donate canned food. Santa, Mrs. Claus, and several elves, will stay an additional half hour until the canned food drive ends at 9 a.m.
