California Department of Education Offers
Speaker Series on Career Technical Education
Career Technical Education Month in California will kick off February 4 with a speaker series at the California Department of Education (CDE) in Sacramento that will address education's role in areas ranging from green technology training to meeting future workforce needs.
Career technical education has changed drastically in the past few decades, expanding in both enrollment and subject matter. Students can explore 21st century industry pathways such as game design, mental and behavioral health studies, green energy, and international business. This year, more than 850,000 students—more than four of every 10 high school students—are enrolled in the 42,610 career technical education classes offered in the state.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson's Career Readiness Initiative aims to support rigorous career technical education that brings relevance to academic courses and helps ensure all students have opportunities to become career and college ready.
The CDE is offering seven sessions highlighting career technical education and its positive impact on student achievement. All events are free, open to the public, and will be available via Webcasting. To access Webcasting, please check back frequently to this Web page for updates, or contact Mikki Parham at mparham@cde.ca.gov. If a news organization would like to cover any part of the speaker series, please contact the Communications Division.
