State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Launches Common Core Summer
Teachers Gather for Hands-on Training to Bring Mathematics Standards to Life
SACRAMENTO—With the state budget setting aside $1.25 billion to implement new standards in California's public schools, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson will discuss California's Common Core Summer with the news media Monday before leading a day-long seminar on the deeper learning students need to graduate ready for a career and college.
The media availability will include California Federation of Teachers Secretary Treasurer Jeff Freitas, and Sacramento City Unified School District Superintendent Jonathan Raymond, as well as educators who will be presenting innovative techniques for teaching the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in mathematics at a day-long showcase sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE).
The event underscores the kind of training teachers from across the state will receive throughout the summer and beyond as schools make the transition to the new standards, which were designed as a practical way to help every student—no matter where they go to school—receive a world-class education. The event will be held at the California Department of Health Care Services building, at 15th Street and Capitol Avenue.
Photo opportunities include a live demonstration of how CCSS is implemented in the classroom, a tour of the CCSS Math Showcase, and access to online courses CDE has developed to help teachers during the transition process. For Spanish-speaking media, California Department of Education Deputy Superintendent Lupita Cortez Alcalá will be present at the news conference.
