State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson to Visit
Career Technical Education Programs in Long Beach

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson will visit Long Beach City College Wednesday to meet with students, school administrators, and community partners showcasing career technical education programs. LBCC leads the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Linked Learning Consortium and was awarded $14.9 million under California's $250 million Career Pathways Trust program, designed to keep students in school and moving toward college and high-demand career fields.

The  Consortium is a regional collaborative among five community colleges, two California State University campuses, 14 school districts, and six local community development partners with the goal of addressing the significant workforce shortages in Los Angeles in the advanced manufacturing and engineering technology industries.  The program is designed to establish a new workforce pipeline for this industry cluster and develop clear pathways with industry-driven technical elements, which begin in high school and continue through a bachelor's degree.

Immediately following the tour, Torlakson, school administrators, and community partners will be available to meet with the media to discuss how the Consortium will prepare students for in-demand careers.
