Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools Adopted by SBE
At its November 6 meeting last week, the State Board of Education (SBE) adopted the Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The Framework provides guidance for educators on a range of topics, including instructional strategies to strengthen learning for every student, the qualities of effective professional development, technology for instruction and learning, criteria for evaluating instructional materials, assessment to improve instruction and learning, and inclusion of financial literacy into math instruction. The Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools is currently available in draft form on the California Department of Education (CDE) Web site and will soon be updated to reflect its final adoption by the SBE.
New CCSS Professional Learning Module Available from the CDE
The CDE is pleased to announce the release of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) English/Language Arts (ELA): Content Literacy in History/Social Studies, Grades Six through Twelve , online professional learning module. This module provides secondary history/social studies teachers with resources to implement the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy to deepen students’ understanding of historical/social studies content, improve critical thinking, and develop literacy. The module contains information, strategies, lessons, videos, and resources to aid teachers in integrating reading and other literacy activities into history/social studies instruction to support all students’ success. Archived Presentation Materials from the CDE Assessment and Accountability Update Meeting Now Available Online
The CDE held assessment and accountability update meetings for district assessment staff on October 21 and 28 in Sacramento and Ontario, respectively. Presentations featured the impact of recent legislation on state assessment, accountability, technology, and data management programs. In addition, an overview of the Smarter Balanced system of assessments and recent development activities was provided. Access to the PDF and PowerPoint versions of presentations is now available on the CDE North/South Information Meetings Web page. Archived videos of each presentation will soon be available on this Web page as well.
Creating Critical Thinkers in the Common Core Classroom

This webinar will offer participants a structure to begin planning units of study to plan for Common Core. Considerations for this planning include backward design, instructional shifts for Common Core, 21st century learning, and the importance of formative assessment to guide instruction.
