Guidance for Investments in Professional Learning

The Consortium for the Implementation of the CCSS has released the "State Guidance for Maximizing Use of New Investments in Professional Learning" External link opens in new window or tab. (PDF) and a corresponding Executive Summary External link opens in new window or tab. (PDF).These documents aim to help districts determine the most effective use of professional learning funds provided by SB 77 and focuses on how districts can approach professional learning in their implementation of California’s academic standards.

2016 California Educator Excellence Summit

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced last week that the CDE is sponsoring a summit to improve professional learning for California educators. “The summit will share promising, research-supported ways to improve professional learning for teachers throughout California,” said Torlakson. “Successful professional learning programs give our hardworking, dedicated teachers additional tools to help our students succeed.” The 2016 California Educator Excellence Summit will be held Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at the Sacramento Convention Center.

The summit is designed for educators who will participate in building and improving professional learning systems in local educational agencies (LEAs). The event is especially relevant because participants are among those who will decide how to allocate $490 million in professional learning funds for teachers provided in the 2015–16 State Budget by the Legislature and the Governor with strong support from Torlakson.

Linda Darling-Hammond, an emeritus education professor at Stanford University and president and CEO of the new Learning Policy Institute, will serve as keynote speaker at the event, which will focus on areas such as recruiting and distributing excellent educators to all communities, educator preparation, induction of teachers and leaders, opportunities for professional learning, educator evaluation, and leadership and career development.

New Resources

CA PTA Assessment Resources

A new link to the California State Parent Teacher Association’s Moving Beyond the Bubble: Improved Tests Are Finally Here External link opens in new window or tab. has been provided on the CDE CAASPP System Web page under the Students and Parents tab. The resources found at Moving Beyond the Bubble provide information about the new assessments, including updated resources to help parents understand their child's CAASPP scores.

Digital Library and Interim Assessments Training

ETS, through the CAASPP administration contract with the CDE, delivered the Smarter Balanced Digital Library and Interim Assessment Clinic for LEA CAASPP coordinators throughout the state last month. This in-person training offered insight on such topics as the use of formative assessment practices to support teaching and learning in the classroom, promoting the use of the Digital Library in LEAs, and considerations for administering interim assessments and interpreting results.

Presentation slides are now available on the CAASPP Digital Library and Interim Assessment Training Web page External link opens in new window or tab.. Educators who use or are interested in using the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments and Digital Library are encouraged to review these highly informative presentation slides.
