CCSS Symposium for Special Educators

Registration is now open for the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Symposium for Special Educators taking place on March 21, 2014, sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE), Special Education Division (SED). To register for the in-person meeting or the live broadcast, please visit the California Services for Technical Assistance and Training (CalSTAT) CCSS Web page [registration closed]. This interactive symposium, Diving Deeper into Aligning the Individualized Education Program (IEP) to the CCSS, will be presented by Kevin Schaefer, Senior Program Associate, WestEd, using materials from the National and State Collaborative work as resources. This is the Field Test Flash from the CDE providing updates about the upcoming Smarter Balanced Field Test. Please forward these flash announcements to all educators who want to stay apprised of the latest information about the Field Test.   • The CDE is pleased to announce the launch of its revised Smarter Balanced Field Test Web page [no longer available], which has been redesigned to provide focused information for specific audiences. The Web page provides easily accessible information through tabs labeled for each of the following audiences: teachers, administrators, students/parents, technology coordinators, and community partners.
  • A parent and guardian notification letter template, available in both English and Spanish, is available on the CDE Smarter Balanced Field Test Communications Web page [no longer available]. Local educational agencies can use this letter to inform parents and guardians about the administration of the Field Test, including its purpose and where to find further information.
  • Smarter Balanced has posted a Webinar that demonstrates the functionality of the Training Tests to testing coordinators and others responsible for administration of the Field Test. The Training Tests are designed to help students become familiar with the software and navigation tools they will use during the Field Test.   • An organization called Wowzers, which produces online mathematics materials for grades three through eight, is marketing a “Smarter Balanced National Pilot” to select districts. This effort has no relationship to the upcoming Smarter Balanced Field Test or to Smarter Balanced in general. Smarter Balanced does not endorse Wowzers or its products.
