ELD Standards Draft Process


Assembly Bill 124 (Fuentes, Chapter 605, Statutes of 2011) directed the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (SSPI) convene a panel of English language development experts in English language instruction, curriculum, and assessment to assist in the update, revise, and align the English Language Development (ELD) standards with state board-approved academic content standards for English language arts.

SSPI recruited educators to serve on four focus groups to provide input on the revision of the ELD Standards.

Panel of Experts

Assembly Bill 124 also directed the SSPI to convene a group of experts for the purpose of updating, revising, and aligning the English language development standards. We are seeking application from those individuals with a minimum of three years English language instruction, curriculum, or assessment experience to serve on this panel to draft standards. Public Hearings

At these hearings, any person may present statements or arguments, orally or in writing, relevant to the proposed action. The SSPI strongly recommends that persons who make oral comments at the public hearing may also submit a written summary of their statements using our comment template (XLS). No oral statements will be accepted subsequent to these public hearings.

Public Review and Comment

Any interested person, or his or her authorized representative, may submit written comments relevant to the proposed standards. The SSPI strongly recommends that feedback be provided utilizing our comment template (XLS).

Comments must be received prior to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 6, 2012. All written comments received by CDE staff during the public comment period are subject to disclosure under the Public Records Act.
