Refugee Students Assistance Program Introduction

Funding for local educational agencies within eight specific counties to provide supplemental programs and services to refugee students and their families for fiscal year 2007-08.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has awarded a federal grant to the Department of Social Services (DSS) in collaboration with the California Department of Education (CDE). The project period is five years beginning in 2005-06.

Objectives

Refugee Student Assistance Program funding objectives are to increase the proportion of refugee children who make progress toward meeting grade level academic standards and graduation requirements, narrow the achievement gap, and enhance the self-sufficiency efforts of refugee families through collaboration with County Refugee Coordinators, voluntary resettlement agencies and other community agencies. 

Activities to support these objectives may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Identification, Assessment and Record Keeping
  • Instructional support
  • Socio-emotional support for students and families
  • Staff professional development
