Early in 2008, the California Department of Education (CDE) rolled-out the California Modified Assessment (CMA) as part of the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program. Eligible students in grades three-five may participate. The Special Education Division of CDE provided training throughout the state from late January through March on how to determine the most appropriate assessment for students with disabilities.
The training included:
- an overview of federal regulations governing alternate assessments
- a guide to understanding the STAR program
- guidelines for determining how students with disabilities will participate in STAR
- use of accommodations and modifications for statewide assessment
- writing grade-level standards based goals
