The primary goal of California’s accountability system is to measure and report on the academic achievement of California’s 6.3 million public school students enrolled in nearly 10,000 schools in more than 1,000 local educational agencies (LEAs). (An LEA is a school district, a county office of education, or statewide benefit Charter School for purposes of accountability reporting.) The system is based both on state requirements established by the Public Schools Accountability Act of 1999 and on federal requirements established by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. State, LEA, and school results are released annually as part of the Accountability Progress Reporting System.
