Beginning in the 2017–18 school year (SY), local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools were no longer identified for Program Improvement (PI). LEAs and schools previously identified for PI were encouraged to use evidence-based interventions, which may have included alternative supports that were designed to improve the academic achievement of socioeconomically disadvantaged students. LEAs and schools that received Title I funds during the 2016–17 SY and previously identified for PI were reported on the California Department of Education Program Improvement Data Files web page for informational purposes only. This information was also included in the 2016–17 School Accountability Report Card (SARC) for informational purposes only in compliance with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) federal law.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson notified County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators on July 14, 2017, in his Every Student Succeeds Act - Update #8 letter containing information on California's transition to the ESSA with a reminder regarding the elimination of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) teacher requirements and an update regarding Title I, Part A requirements for the 2017–18 SY.
