2013 Timeline of Activities

Program activities and dates for the 2013 California Teachers of the Year Program.
Activity
Date
Participating districts, charter schools, private schools, and professional organizations distribute local applications and organize local Teacher of the Year recognition activities. February 2012
County offices of education (COEs) conduct regional selection and recognition processes for district finalists. February – July 2012
Postmark deadline for COEs to submit state applications to the California Department of Education (CDE). August 24, 2012
The state selection committee - made up of teachers, administrators, and organization representatives - reviews applications. September 20 – 22, 2012
COEs are contacted to arrange site visits for selected applicants.

September 26 – October 5, 2012

Site visits are conducted by a team of teacher-observers. Early October 2012
Selected applicants are interviewed by a state selection committee that includes the State Superintendent of Public Instruction or his designee. October 24, 2012
The State Superintendent of Public Instruction makes the final selection and personally notifies the California Teachers of the Year. End of October 2012
The Council of Chief State School Officers is notified of California's nominee for the National Teacher of the Year Program. End of October 2012
The CDE publicly announces the 2013 California Teachers of the Year in a news release. Late October 2012
California Teachers of the Year meet at the CDE for a professional development day and lunch with the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. (Pending available funding) December 3, 2012
California Teachers of the Year and additional honorees are honored at a special event. February 11, 2013
