Caleb Cheung
Secondary Science Awardee
Caleb teaches seventh grade life science at Frick Middle School in the Oakland Unified School District. He also mentors other science teachers and is the Science Department Chairperson. He plans and organizes special science activities, such as the Science Fair and Science Olympiad, for students and their families. Caleb has been teaching in Oakland since 1996 and has also taught in Mexico, Bulgaria, and Burma.
Caleb's credentials include a Bachelor's Degree in Integrated Science from University of California Berkeley in 1994, National Board Certification in Early Adolescence Science in 2000, and a Master's Degree in Education from Stanford University in 2003.
Caleb has received much recognition in his field, including the Marcus Foster Educational Institute Distinguished Educator of the Year award, the Prudential California Realty Foundation Teaching Award, and the McKay Urban Scholar Award for Excellence in Teaching.
The most important aspect of working in an urban school is establishing meaningful and appropriate relationships with students. Teaching middle school students requires you to teach the whole child, which includes intellectual as well as social and emotional needs. — Caleb Cheung
