Dear CAHSEE District Coordinators:

Data Collection Pertaining to California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE)
Waiver and  Exemption for Students with Disabilities under
California Education Code sections 60851(c) and 60852.4

California Education Code (EC) Section 60851(c) allows local school district governing boards to waive the requirement to pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) for students with disabilities testing with modifications and scoring 350 or above on one or both parts of the exam. EC Section 60852.4 provided a one-year exemption of the requirement to pass CAHSEE for certain students with disabilities in the class of 2007. Based on California Code of Regulations, Title 5 Sections 1207.1 and 1207.2, the California Department of Education (CDE) must collect CAHSEE waiver and exemption information from school districts for those students with disabilities in the Class of 2007 that:

  • Have been granted a waiver to one or both parts of the CAHSEE requirement, and/or
  • Have an IEP or Section 504 plan dated on or before July, 2006, that indicates that the pupil is scheduled to graduate in 2007, but who has not yet passed both sections of the examination.

Please provide your report no later than February 29, 2008. We have automated this process to minimize your data collection and reporting burden. The collection system relies on the use of a password encrypted Excel spreadsheet. A set of instructions and a template to record the data are enclosed with this letter.

  • Instructions for Using the CAHSEE Waiver and Exemption Data Collection Form (A separate e-mail will be sent with your password to access the data collection form.)
  • CAHSEE Waiver and Exemption Data Collection Form (an encrypted Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet)

Your completed form should be sent via e-mail to cahseedatacollections@cde.ca.gov. Please do not change the spreadsheet password. For questions on the CAHSEE waiver and exemption process, contact the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) Office at 916-445-9449, and for questions on the data collection process, contact the Assessment Data Management Office at 916-445-8420.

Sincerely,
