Statewide Pupil Assessment System

Latest information about the reauthorization of California's assessment system.

California Education Code Section 60604.5 requires the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (SSPI) to consult with specific stakeholder groups in developing recommendations for the reauthorization of the statewide pupil assessment system, which includes a plan for transitioning to a system of high-quality assessments. The law directs the SSPI to report the recommendations to the fiscal and appropriate policy committees of both houses of the Legislature on or before November 1, 2012.

Reauthorization Outreach Plan

The purpose of the Outreach Plan for the statewide assessment reauthorization is to provide information regarding CDE’s outreach efforts to include multiple opportunities for public input and suggestions. The plan includes details about the Work Group meetings, regional public meetings, reauthorization e-mail account, focus groups, and a feedback survey.

California Education Code Section 60604.5 directs the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to consult with specific stakeholders to develop recommendations, including a transition plan, on the reauthorization of California’s pupil assessment system.

To facilitate the development of recommendations, the California Department of Education (CDE) formed a work group comprised of stakeholders identified in statute. There were six (6) meetings in the Sacramento area between March and September 2012. These meetings were open to the public.

Focus Groups

The California Department of Education (CDE) will conduct focus groups during summer 2012. Participants will include teachers, administrators, parents, students, business organizations, and higher education faculty. The purpose of the focus groups is to gather information from specific stakeholders around the areas of consideration outlined in statute. Focus groups will take place at the Sacramento County Office of Education and the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

Information gathering meetings were conducted for three regions throughout California to seek public input on the bill.
