Smarter Balanced Ready: Six Big Ideas for Educators!
“Smarter Balanced Ready” is a collection of examples of successful approaches local educational agencies (LEAs) have used to implement the Smarter Balanced system of assessments. For this collection, LEA staff have shared what they learned over the past two years while undergoing the shift to deeper learning in a comprehensive way. These approaches have been organized into six “big ideas”:
- Students Benefit from Taking Interim Assessments
- Teachers Use Interim Assessment Data to Improve Instruction
- Adults Learn First, Then Help Students
- Using the Assessment System Is a Team Effort
- Sustainable Teams Continuously Improve
- Communicate Early and Often
LEA staff and educators can find this collection of examples on the Smarter Balanced Web site . This resource includes implementation recommendations and stories of how district-level work was done and resources were developed by educators.
To find out more about “Smarter Balanced Ready,” including how this resource came about and what others are saying, see the Smarter Balanced Ready Fact Sheet (PDF) and the blog post on Smarter News , a site that hosts news, press releases, and feature articles that can be filtered in a number of ways, including by state, audience, and assessment type. Exempting English Learners
When determining whether recently arrived English learner (EL) students are exempt from taking the 2016–17 Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment for English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA), please use April 15, 2016, as the cutoff date. This is the common start date that is applied to all EL students for federal accountability purposes. Any EL student who first enrolled in a U.S. school after April 15, 2016, may be exempted from taking the 2016–17 assessment for ELA.
CAA for Science and the Student’s Assessment Protocol
If you are administering the California Alternate Assessment (CAA) for Science pilot test, remember to save the student’s results in his or her confidential record for one year. While no test scores will be entered or provided for this first pilot year, you may be contacted by Educational Testing Service for your feedback on the test itself, the student’s experience, and your experience as test examiner.
Meet an SNE Member!
Meet Joanna Jimenez, a California educator for more than 12 years and a member of the Digital Library State Network of Educators (SNE) since 2015. Joanna teaches middle school mathematics at Aveson Global Leadership Academy in the Pasadena Unified School District.
Since joining the SNE, Joanna has actively participated in California Department of Education (CDE)- and Smarter Balanced-hosted sessions during which SNE members develop and review Digital Library resources. What Percent of Your Day? (Digital Library account required) is a favorite resource that she contributed. This middle-school lesson focuses on developing accuracy when adding multiple numbers. While working to apply mathematics to real life, the students develop an understanding of how fractions, decimals, percentages, and degrees relate. This lesson engages students in the formative assessment process through a self-evaluation of their work and collaboration with a peer or the teacher.
To learn more about Joanna and other members of the SNE, please visit the CDE Meet an SNE Member Web page.
