Small School District and County Office of Education Bus Replacement Program

Funding Description

Funding is provided to small school districts and county offices of education to upgrade school buses to comply with 1992 federal safety standards. When allocating funding, the first priority will be for the purchase of new school buses to replace existing vehicles. The second priority will be for reconditioning existing school buses. Any remaining funds will be available for the purchase of new school buses to increase the fleet owned by the district or county office.

Allocation Formula Seventy-five percent of the funds will be allocated based upon priority categories of vehicle age, mileage, and type of vehicle. Twenty-five percent of the funds will be allocated based upon the condition of the vehicles to be replaced. Funds will be available for reconditioning or replacement of special education buses if not less than the proportion as the percentage of vehicles used compares to total school buses in the state. (Education Code Section 42291)
