This Month’s Featured Digital Library Resource—“Using Rubrics to Improve Student Writing”

This month’s featured Digital Library resource, “Using Rubrics to Improve Student Writing,” External link opens in new window or tab. (Digital Library account required) links Smarter Balanced assessment content with formative assessment strategies teachers can incorporate into their day-to-day instruction. Through a writing activity that uses Smarter Balanced sample items or Interim Assessment constructed-response items, teachers select appropriate items from relevant sample test or interim assessment items and ask students to respond. After drafting their responses, the students use a rubric to self-assess the strength of their draft, and then meet with a peer to receive feedback before revising their draft. While the lesson is designed for grade six students, the process of using sample Smarter Balanced content for instructional purposes can be used with students at all levels.

This resource, developed by California educator Christina Lambie, a district administrator in the Woodland Joint Unified School District and member of the Digital Library State Network of Educators, is highlighted in the newest installment of the California Department of Education (CDE) Formative Assessment in Action video series. Explore “Using Rubrics” alongside the new “Action” video to learn more about instructional approaches and find suggestions for how to use the Smarter Balanced system to enhance instruction.
