Assessment Spotlight, Issue 60

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) email update, September 4, 2019.

Focusing on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System and English Language Proficiency Assessments of California (ELPAC)—and including, when timely, updates on California’s other statewide assessments.

This Month’s Featured Digital Library Resource: “Find My Equation”

September’s featured Digital Library resource is “Find My Equation,” an instructional high school mathematics resource that provides practice for recognizing equivalent equations in their various forms. Students begin this lesson by completing an “entrance ticket,” which asks them to connect various equations to one of three forms of quadratic equations: standard, factored, or vertex. The entrance ticket serves as a formative assessment strategy to elicit students’ understanding of quadratic equations. The students then work in pairs to sort cards, matching equations to the three forms.

In addition to the instructional materials, this resource provides explanations of how to differentiate the activities for each student’s ability level on the basis of their performance on the entrance ticket. The lesson ends with students filling out an “exit ticket,” giving them an opportunity to reflect on their learning and allowing the teacher to the gauge progress in student learning.

This resource is one of many provided in the Digital Library that is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for mathematics.
