Broadband Infrastructure Improvement Grant Available

To further support online computer-based testing in California, in 2015-16 the state budget included $50 million for network infrastructure improvement for schools and districts. This opportunity was handled through a grant application process and services are distributed by the K-12 High-Speed Network (K12HSN), in consultation with the California Department of Education (CDE) and State Board of Education (SBE). Current projects can be viewed on the Broadband Infrastructure Improvement Grant (BIIG) Circuit Installation web page External link opens in new window or tab..

As stated in the 2015–16 budget bill language (Assembly Bill 93):

First priority for critical need grants shall go to local educational agencies that are unable to administer computer-based assessments at the school site and will experience the greatest benefit in terms of the number of students able to be assessed at the school site as a result of the grant. Second priority for critical need grants shall go to the local educational agencies that have to shut down essential operations to administer computer-based assessments at the school site, including, but not limited to, business services, email, and access to other critical online activities.

There is still an opportunity to upgrade your schools that are unable to administer computer-based assessments online such as CAASPP and ELPAC. By June 25, 2021, please complete the BIIG Need Form External link opens in new window or tab..

June’s Featured Resource in Tools for Teachers—Understanding English Language Arts/Literacy Performance Tasks Instructional Resource Creation: Grades 3–5

Are you looking for a resource to prepare students for the Smarter Balanced English language arts/literacy (ELA) Performance Task? If so, the professional learning resource Understanding ELA Performance Tasks Instructional Resource Creation: Grades 3–5 External link opens in new window or tab. (logon required) is the resource for you! This resource breaks down the performance task for the teacher, to allow for a better understanding of the essential components. By deconstructing the performance task, teachers can better prepare students to show what they know and can do on an ELA performance task.

While working through the professional learning activities in this resource, the teacher develops an understanding of ELA performance tasks by reviewing and gathering information from performance task sample prompts, claims, targets, Tools for Teachers Interim Assessment Connections Playlist performance progressions, and Smarter Balanced writing rubrics. Then, the teacher uses this information to create their own instructional resource with lesson activities that target a performance task claim. Attachments and links to materials that help guide the teacher through the review process and creation of the lesson are included in this resource.

This Tools for Teachers resource is part of a series of professional learning resources that help teachers create lesson plans specific to performance tasks by subject and grade-level span. Check out similar performance task resources for ELA as well as for mathematics that focus on other grade levels (6–8, high school); they are listed and linked on this Tools for Teachers Professional Learning Resources web page External link opens in new window or tab. (logon required). LEA staff can obtain a Tools for Teachers account through self-registration or through their LEA CAASPP coordinator.

Please share this email with any educators in your LEA who would be interested in or benefit from this information.
