2021 CAC: Call for Shared Practices Proposals!

At last year’s California Assessment Conference (CAC), sessions featuring school and district practices were some of the highest-rated parts of the conference! We are now looking for teams of educators from across the state to lead our Shared Practice sessions for this year’s virtual CAC, which will take place October 12–14.

Knowing that the power of peer-to-peer learning is well understood and appreciated by California educators, we are planning for Shared Practices sessions that will feature teachers, teams, and school sites that have developed best practices for implementing assessment resources in support of teaching and learning.

Reminder: Submit Summative ELPAC Answer Books

Local educational agencies (LEAs) are reminded to complete and submit their Summative ELPAC Writing Answer Books for kindergarten through grade two (K–2) as soon as possible. To date, only 16 percent of LEAs have submitted the Answer Books, and this delay may impact ETS’s ability to conduct the quality control process required in order to release Summative ELPAC Student Score Reports. We thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

ELPAC Question of the Week

Q: Once our LEA submits the Summative ELPAC K–2 Writing Answer Books, how long does it take for the information to update in the Completion Status Report?

A: The completion status report will be updated once the K–2 Writing Answer Books are scanned and sent to processing and ETS verifies that there are no issues to be resolved. If ETS does encounter any issues with the materials, an ETS representative will reach out to the LEA.

The materials reach ETS approximately five to eight business days after being shipped by the LEA. Then, processing time is two to three days, depending on volume. If LEAs do not see the information updated in the Completion Status Report after 10 business days, they should contact the California Technical Assistance Center by phone at 800-955-2954 or by email at

Registration Open for New Coordinator Training—Summer ELPAC Sessions

Calling all LEA ELPAC coordinators who are new to their role or want a refresher! The 2021–22 New Coordinator Training—Summer ELPAC sessions, hosted by our county office of education partners, will take place in June. During the first ELPAC coordinator training, participants will:

  • Become familiar with the Initial and Summative ELPAC processes.
  • Review the responsibilities of the ELPAC coordinator.
  • Learn about suggested time frames for completing activities.
  • Explore procedures and practices to support a successful ELPAC administration.

Register Now for the 2021 Interim and Formative Assessment Training Series!

The engaging Interim and Formative Assessment Training Series will provide participants with direct, online training focused on leveraging the interim and formative components of the Smarter Balanced comprehensive system of assessments to inform teaching and learning. This online training is designed for teachers, instructional coaches, and educators on special assignment, but administrators and LEA CAASPP and ELPAC coordinators also may find this training useful to further support educators locally.

The training series will consist of three distinct, independent components:

  • Module 1—Using the Formative Assessment Process and Tools for Teachers Website to Boost Instruction
  • Module 2—Gauging Student Progress with the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments and Related Online Systems
  • Module 3—Interim Assessment Hand Scoring

Participants may attend one or more of the modules and will have multiple opportunities—in both the summer and fall—to attend. Sessions in the summer and fall will cover the same content.
