California English Language Development Test (CELDT) Students in kindergarten through grade twelve whose home language is not English are required by law to take an English skills test. In California, the test is called the CELDT. 2001 to Current
California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) Beginning in 2006, all California high school students were required to pass a test to earn a high school diploma. The test is called the CAHSEE. Senate Bill 172, signed into law effective January 1, 2016, suspended the CAHSEE diploma requirement and the administration of the CAHSEE through the 2017-18 school year. 2002 to 2015
Physical Fitness Test (PFT) The physical fitness test (PFT) for students in California schools is the FITNESSGRAM. The main goal of the test is to help students in starting life-long habits of regular physical activity. 1999 to Current
Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Each spring, students in grades two through eleven take STAR tests. The STAR Program looks at how well schools and students are performing. Students take tests in math, reading, writing, science, and history. 2003 to 2013
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System replaced the STAR Program in 2014. That same year, the CDE conducted a full census field test of the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics. The CAASPP System encompasses the Smarter Balanced Interim and Summative Assessments for ELA and mathematics for students in grades three through eight and grade eleven; the California Science Test (CAST) for students in grades five, eight, and high school; the California Alternate Assessments (CAAs) for ELA, mathematics, and science; and a primary language assessment: the Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS) for Spanish-speaking English learners in grades two through eleven.
