Glossary-2017 ACT Report

This glossary defines key terms shown on the school, district, county, and state level 2017 ACT Report

Background

The California Department of Education (CDE) has a data agreement with the ACT, Inc. that allows the CDE to match ACT test takers to California public schools in order to produce an ACT report for each school and district. As with previous reports, the CDE is providing results for the graduating class of 2017, as defined by the ACT, Inc. These results are aggregated to produce school, district, county, and state-level reports.

 

The ACT Report includes only California public schools that had either:

  1. At least one student who took the ACT exam (Note: To preserve student anonymity, scores are replaced with an asterisks [*] for schools that had fewer than 15 students taking the ACT.), or

  2. Zero students who took the ACT exam but had a grade-twelve enrollment greater than or equal to 15. (Note: Results for these schools are replaced with an N/A [Not Applicable]).

The schools in (1) and (2) are high, middle, K-12, opportunity, or alternative. Adult education schools do not receive a report.

Note: California Education Authority (CEA) school's ACT results are not reported at the school or district levels but are rolled up to the county and state levels.

ACT scores range from 1 to 36 points.

ACT Report

The terms described below are listed in the order in which they appear in the table.

Name

Name of county, district, or school.

Grade 12 Enrollment

Enrollment is based on the number of students enrolled in grade twelve, as reported by LEAs in California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS) as of Fall Census Day in October 2016. (Note: The enrollment does not include "ungraded" students.)

Number Tested

The number of students with ACT exam scores as reported by ACT, Inc. (Note: The ACT, Inc.  generates the high school (HS) code based on the school name inputted by the student on the ACT exam. The CDE uses the HS code and the school name to identify the school's County-District-School (CDS) code so that student’s ACT scores can be linked to the appropriate school.)

Average Score: Reading

The average reading score was calculated by dividing the sum of the students' reading ACT scores by the "Number Tested."

Average Score: English

The average English score was calculated by dividing the sum of the students' English ACT scores by the "Number Tested."

Average Score: Math

The average math score was calculated by dividing the sum of the students' math ACT scores by the "Number Tested."

Average Score: Science

The average science score was calculated by dividing the sum of the students' science ACT scores by the "Number Tested."

Number of Scores >=21

This was the number of students who scored 21 points or more on the composite score. The composite score was taken from the data file received from ACT, Inc.

Percent of Scores >=21

This item identifies the percent of students who scored 21 points or more on the composite score by dividing the "Number of Scores >= 21" by the "Number Tested."
