Glossary-2013 AP Report

This glossary defines key terms shown in the data files for school, district, county and state level records

The terms described below are listed in the order in which they appear in the headings.

Background

This document is meant to accompany the Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Results Report (AP Report). The California Department of Education (CDE) receives student-level AP data from the College Board. These data are then aggregated to produce school, district, county, and state-level reports. The AP Report includes only California public schools that had (1) at least one student taking the AP exam or (2) zero students taking the AP exam but had 11 or more enrollment in grades eleven and/or twelve. The enrollment information is based on data submitted by local educational agencies (LEAs) and maintained in the CALPADS. The AP Report focuses on all AP exams taken at a particular school, without regard to the subject area. Because students may take multiple AP exams, the combined number of exams with scores 1 through 5 (shown in the last five columns of the report) may not equal the number of exam takers. In addition, because the AP data from the College Board contain student records that are missing grade-level information, percentages (including average scores) cannot be calculated specifically for grade twelve. The number of exams by score received is not shown for schools that had fewer than eleven students taking AP exams in order to preserve the anonymity of the students.

AP Report

Grade 12 Enrollment

The number of students reported as enrolled in grade twelve. (NOTE: For district, county, and state reports, the enrollment does not reflect the total enrollment of all the schools in the district, county, or state, but reflects the enrollment of only those schools that received an AP Report.) Data reported to CALPADS by LEAs (as of October 2012 Fall Census Day).

Grades 11 and 12 Enrollment

The number of students reported as enrolled in grades eleven and twelve.

Number of Exam Takers

The number of students in all grades for whom the College Board reported AP exam scores. (Note: Because students may take multiple AP exams, the combined number of exams with scores 1 through 5 may not equal the number of exam takers.) College Board and CDE public school data. (Note: A secondary school code recorded by student on AP exam is used to link AP data to the school.)
