English Language Learner Acquisition and Development Pilot Project

Funding Description

The pilot project, to be conducted in the 2007-08, 2008-09, and 2009-10 school years, provides funding to identify existing best practices regarding topics, including, but not limited to, curriculum, instruction, and staff development for teaching English language learners and promoting English language and academic English acquisition and development. The intent of the pilot project is not to compare the effectiveness of instructional methods for English language learners, but rather to identify practices that demonstrate success for English language learners in achieving English proficiency, regardless of instructional setting.

Eligible Applicants Local educational agencies
Required Eligibility Criteria Based on the recommendations of advisory committee members and in consultation with the Office of the Secretary of Education, prospective schools must have: a significant English learner (EL) subgroup for accountability purposes, met the Title III Annual Measurable Achievement Objective (AMAO) 1 target for 2005-06, a minimum of 10 percent EL population, and met the EL Subgroup Academic Performance Index (API) target for 2005-06. Program Improvement schools in Years 4 and 5 are not eligible to apply.
