CACFP Annual Updates 2020–21

The California Department of Education (CDE) recognizes the challenges that our Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) sponsors are facing under the current circumstances of COVID-19. We want to express our gratitude for your continued service and dedication to the children.

Currently, the United States Department of Agriculture has not waived the requirements for CACFP annual updates. The CDE is actively identifying and developing how we can streamline and support our sponsors through these difficult times.

In preparation for the 2020–21 CACFP annual update, this posting notifies CACFP agencies that part of the annual update application process includes submitting the CACFP Financial Summary Document.

According to Title 7, Code of Federal Regulations, sections 226.6(b)(1) and (2), the California Department of Education must review financial information annually. The CACFP Financial Summary Document is a self-reporting tool that captures pertinent financial figures. This information is required and used by the Nutrition Services Division (NSD) to help determine a CACFP agency’s financial viability.

The document, along with the instructions, is available in the Download Forms section of the Child Nutrition Information and Payment System (CNIPS), Form ID CACFP 87.

Agencies must upload the form to the Checklist section of the Application Packet in the CNIPS. Agencies may also fax, email, or mail the document to their assigned specialist’s attention.

  • Do not submit the agency-wide 12-month independently audited financial statement, a Profit/Loss Statement, or income tax returns in lieu of the Form ID CACFP 87.
  • Public agencies (school food authorities, government, and county agencies) are not required to submit the Form 87.
  • Before you begin your annual update for Program Year (PY) 2020–21, you must ensure that your CNIPS Application Packet for PY 2019–20 is in an Approved status. Select PY 2019–20, open your Application Packet, and ensure that all forms and Site Applications are in an Approved status.
Annual Update Deadline

The PY 2020–21 opens on Friday, July 31st, 2020. Agencies must update and submit their application in the CNIPS prior to August 31, 2020. The submittal of the CACFP Financial Summary Document is one of the requirements for a complete annual update.

The NSD may declare agencies seriously deficient in their program operations if they do not update all documents by the deadline.

Please note: If you do not wish to continue your participation in the CACFP, you must complete and submit the Self-cancellation Request Form (Form ID CACFP 42) immediately. The form is available in the Download Forms section of the CNIPS.
