Nutrition Physical Activity Tip Sheets


The California Department of Education (CDE) Nutrition Services Division has posted several nutrition and physical activity tip sheets in English and Spanish to their website. These colorful tip sheets are targeted toward child nutrition professionals and parents of preschool-age children.

These tip sheets were formerly on the Healthy and Active Preschooler’s website, and they have recently been moved to the CDE Child Nutrition Program’s Resource Library web page under the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) tab. The following is a list of the available tip sheets:

  • Division of Responsibility in Feeding: Provides basic information on how to feed children based on Ellyn Satter’s Division of Responsibility.
  • Division of Responsibility in Feeding, Spanish (División de responsabilidades en la alimentación): Proporciona información básica sobre cómo alimentar a los niños según la División de Responsabilidad de Ellyn Satter.
  • Make Food Fun and Attractive: Provides ideas for making food fun and attractive to encourage healthy eating for children.
  • Make Food Fun and Attractive, Spanish (Prepare Alimentos Atractivos y Divertidos): Proporciona ideas para hacer que la comida sea divertida y atractiva para fomentar una alimentación saludable para los niños.
  • Simple Ways to Offer Vegetables: Provides suggestions on how to increase children’s consumption of vegetables.
  • Simple Ways to Offer Vegetables, Spanish (Maneras Sencillas de Ofrecer Verduras): Proporciona sugerencias sobre cómo aumentar el consumo de verduras en los niños.
  • Cooking with Young Children: Provides ideas for involving children in the kitchen to teach them basic nutrition and cooking skills, and increase consumption of nutritious foods.
  • Cooking with Young Children, Spanish (Cocinar con Niños Pequeños): Proporciona ideas para involucrar a los niños en la cocina para enseñarles nutrición básica y habilidades culinarias, y aumentar el consumo de alimentos nutritivos.
  • Active Play for Preschoolers: Provides ideas to engage children in active play throughout the day.
  • Active Play for Preschoolers, Spanish (El Juego Activo para los Niños de edad Preescolar): Proporciona ideas para involucrar a los niños en el juego activo durante todo el día.

    This letter provides guidance to Local Education Agencies on the use of Free and Reduced-Price Meal (FRPM) applications for meal eligibility and funding purposes during the 2020–21 school year.

    Attachment to the Use of FRPM Data for Funding Purposes letter. Provides requirements for collecting free and reduced-price meal eligibility data used to determine supplemental and concentration grant funding based on meal program type.
  • COVID-19 Required Reporting CNP Assessment (added 20-Nov-2020)
    The USDA requires assessment information on the effectiveness of the waivers in providing improved services to program participants. The CDE NSD is requiring that program operators complete the CDE COVID-19 CNP Waivers Assessment survey.
