On April 1, 2021, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service released COVID-19: Child Nutrition Response #83: Nationwide Waiver to Allow Sponsors that Successfully Participated in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) in Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 to Operate as Experienced Sponsors in FY 2021.

This waiver is available for SFSP operators who successfully participated in the SFSP in FY 2019, but not in FY 2020, due to COVID-19.

Program regulations at Title 7, Code of Federal Regulations (7 CFR), Section 225.6(c)(2) outline requirements for new applicant sponsors. Under this waiver, returning SFSP sponsors that operated and were in good standing in FY 2019 and did not operate during 2020, due to COVID-19, may utilize the streamlined experienced sponsor application process, per 7 CFR, Section 225.6(c)(3). This waiver also enables these experienced sponsors to forego the pre-approval site visit requirement, stated in 7 CFR, Section 225.7(d)(1)(l).

This waiver is effective immediately and will remain in effect through September 30, 2021, or for the duration of the summer operations, whichever is earlier.
