Disability Modifications Including Food Allergies

The California Department of Education (CDE) is pleased to share our newly released Disability Modifications Including Food Allergies web page. This consolidated resource aligns with Assembly Bill 2640, commonly known as Zacky’s Bill, which established California Education Code (EC) Section 49414.2. The new web page provides:

  • An overview of existing federal and state meal modification requirements in the School Nutrition Programs (SNP)

  • Valuable information for school food authorities (SFA) regarding reasonable meal modifications to accommodate children with disabilities, including food allergies

  • Helpful links for SFAs and families to ensure all children have access to safe and healthy school meals

SFAs participating in the federal SNP are required to accommodate children with disabilities. The CDE encourages all SFAs to review the new web page and include this as a training resource for your school food service staff.
