Food Literacy Month in California

The California Department of Education (CDE) Nutrition Services Division (NSD) encourages program operators to participate in Food Literacy Month (FLM). FLM is a month-long campaign that promotes food literacy education. FLM is celebrated the month of September each year in California. By definition, food literacy is understanding the effect of our food choices on our health, environment, and economy. Enhancing food literacy education in the K-12 school environment is a powerful tool to help reduce health inequalities faced by far too many students.

Our food choices and current food system challenges are linked to human disease, climate change, poor nutrition, food waste, lack of access to quality healthy foods, food safety issues, and so much more. Food literacy education and awareness in our California schools can be part of the solution.

FLM activities can be simple; they can be done in-person or virtually, as a separate lesson or incorporated into core subjects. We encourage you to integrate FLM education and activities in a way that works best for your school, teachers, and students. Below are few ideas.

FLM Ideas

  • Have students write letters to farmers or fruit growers
  • Have students sample a new fruit or vegetable and connect the produce to where it comes from
  • Watch a farm tour video and follow-up with a classroom Question and Answer session
  • Take students to a local farmers market to ask farmers about their farms and produce
  • Try a simple local recipe in the classroom, visit the Food Literacy Center web page External link opens in new window or tab. for recipe ideas including breakfast, budget-friendly, breads, snacks and more.
  • Experiment with cooking in the classroom, visit the CDE Resource Library web page for ideas.
