2022 KIT Funds for Eligible Program Operators

The California Department of Education (CDE) will be hosting an orientation webinar for the 2022 Kitchen Infrastructure and Training (KIT) Funds on October 12, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The 2022 KIT Funds allocated an additional $600 million to allow eligible agencies to continue expanding or modifying their kitchen equipment, infrastructure, and food service staff training. These funds will be apportioned to local educational agencies (LEA), defined in Assembly Bill 181 as school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools that sponsor the National School Lunch Program or the School Breakfast Program.

Interested agencies for the upcoming KIT Funds webinar must complete an online registration within the time requested in order to receive these funds. This registration is currently under development. You will be notified when the registration is available.

Participation in this webinar is not required in order to receive funds. The webinar will not be recorded; however, presentation slides will be posted on the CDE KIT web page.

In addition to the $600 million for KIT, the California Legislature also provided $100 million for School Food Best Practices. These funds will support procurement and utilization of California-grown or produced foods in freshly prepared onsite meals. Additional information, including a separate online application for this funding, will be released early next year.

The webinar will include information on the following topics, specific to the 2022 KIT Funds:

  • Purpose and Eligibility
  • Funding Formulas
  • Accounting Details
  • Kitchen and Training Expenditures
  • Allowable and Unallowable Costs
  • Reporting Requirements
