National Farm to School Month

The California Department of Education (CDE) Nutrition Services Division (NSD) invites you to celebrate National Farm to School (F2S) month during October! National F2S Month is an excellent opportunity to showcase your F2S accomplishments, celebrate your connections with local farmers, decorate your school cafeteria, get students excited about produce, enjoy delicious meal trays filled with local, seasonal, and farm-fresh ingredients, share your F2S photos, videos and stories, and if the time is right, start expanding on your F2S program!

The CDE NSD is proud of your F2S efforts. F2S programs, lessons, and celebrations benefit everyone from students, school staff, parents, to the local farmers. Students who participate show increased fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity, increased knowledge about our food system, a willingness to try new and healthy foods and choose healthier options in the cafeteria and at home. Schools that participate show an increased offering of fruits and vegetables and increased knowledge of local foods. Farmers see an increased diversification in the market and new opportunities.

Celebration Ideas

  • Connect with a local farmer to start the dialogue about F2S opportunities
  • Highlight the local, seasonal, and/or farm-fresh ingredients your cafeteria is featuring on the October menu
  • Give the produce fresh names (i.e.: Perfectly Picked Peaches or Vine-ripe Yellow Squash)
  • Host a F2S themed breakfast or lunch
  • Feature the school garden pickings on your menus
  • Host a tasting of local produce
  • Decorate the meal service area with agricultural-related art or information and connect it with the foods served

Share Your Celebration

  • Share with parents/guardians your accomplishments and celebrations on your school district web site, through parent emails, and in the school newsletter! You can utilize the flyer or the content in the Benefits of F2S flyer External link opens in new window or tab. in your correspondence.
  • Share your experiences with other program operators on your favorite social media platform(s) and use the hashtag #F2SMonth and #farmtoschool.
