Subject: Smoothies Offered in the Child Nutrition Programs—Revised


This Management Bulletin (MB) provides information and guidance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on the crediting of smoothies in the child nutrition programs (CNP). The guidance focuses on the service of smoothies in the School Nutrition Programs (SNP) but is applicable across all CNPs (e.g., the Child and Adult Care Food Program [CACFP] and the Summer Food Service Program [SFSP]).

Background

The USDA Food and Nutrition Service has modified the guidance on smoothies to allow for the crediting of vegetables and yogurt in smoothies at any meal or snack offered through the CNPs, including supper for the CACFP and SFSP. These additional ingredients provide variety to program operators seeking to include appealing and nutritious smoothies on their menus.

Please refer to the revised Policy Memorandum for a series of questions and answers that provide further clarification on how smoothies are credited under the CNPs. New or updated questions are noted with an asterisk.
