Turnip the Beet Award-Summer 2023


The California Department of Education (CDE), Nutrition Services Division is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service Turnip the Beet Award has returned for Summer 2023.

The Turnip the Beet Award honors and recognizes outstanding Summer Meal Program sponsors and partners who work hard during the summer months to offer high quality, appealing, and nutritious meals to children. The award is open to all Summer Meal Program sponsors and partners that participate in the Summer Food Service Program or the Seamless Summer Option of the National School Lunch Program. The USDA Turnip the Beet! High Quality Summer Meals Award nomination form External link opens in new window or tab. (PDF) for summer 2023 is available. Nominations must contain all of the requested information to be considered for an award. Note that the USDA requires all nominations to include a one-month menu. Please submit your completed nomination forms to SFSP@cde.ca.gov.

The CDE nomination packet deadline for this award is August 30, 2023. We look forward to hearing all about the great work our operators have been doing this summer!
