Universal Meals Listening Session Webinar #2

On November 2, 2021, at 2 p.m., the Nutrition Services Division (NSD) is hosting the second in a series of listening sessions for the newly established California Universal Meals Program (Universal Meals) beginning in School Year 2022–23.

Through the California Universal Meals Programs, public school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools serving students in grades K–12 will provide two meals free of charge (breakfast and lunch) during each school day to students requesting a meal, regardless of their free or reduced-price meal eligibility.

For the November listening session, we will be joined by State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, Senator Nancy Skinner (invited), and several nutrition partners who will share their knowledge and strategies for maximizing access to nutritious foods by creating strong school breakfast programs, minimizing food waste, and strengthen direct certification processes.

Panelists will include:

  • Wendi Gosliner: Nutrition Policy Institute
  • Kathy Saile: No Kid Hungry California
  • Tia Shimada: Nourish California

If you have any questions or feedback prior to the Universal Meals Listening Session, please email Your feedback is helpful to inform the NSD of content for future listening sessions.

In addition, the NSD will hold a listening session in January 2022. This listening session will focus on Community Eligibility Provision implementation and maximizing direct certification. Registration information for the January 2022 session is forthcoming.

Target Audience

The target audience includes all state and local school nutrition professionals, superintendents, school business officials, and community partners involved in school meal service.
