Unprocessed Fruit and Vegetable Pilot Applications

The California Department of Education (CDE) Food Distribution Program (FDP) is accepting applications from recipient agencies (RA) that are interested in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Pilot Project for the Procurement of Unprocessed Fruits and Vegetables. The goal of the pilot is to provide additional opportunities for FDP RAs to use entitlement funds on fresh fruits and vegetables from USDA approved pilot vendors. Limited funding is now available since the assessment of recently placed requests. The number of applicants approved will be based on how much the state pilot entitlement is available. Applicants that are declined will be added to a waiting list.

Please note that entitlement for the pilot is not in addition to what has been allocated for the school year and adjustments to recently submitted orders may be required. Additionally, private co-op members may need to request permission from their lead district prior to final approval by the FDP.

RAs who are interested in participating in the pilot in the School Year (SY) 2020–21 are required to submit the following information by email to FFVPilot@cde.ca.gov by June 19, 2020.

  • Agency Name
  • Agency’s Child Nutrition Information and Payment System vendor number
  • Number of National School Lunch Program participants for SY 2017–18
  • Percentage of students receiving free or reduced-priced meals for SY 2017–18
  • Agency’s contact information (email address and phone number)
  • Reason the agency is interested in participating
  • Desired entitlement allocation for pilot (pending approval and availability)

RAs must be approved by the FDP prior to procuring produce through the pilot. Approvals are based on established criteria, including geographic region, size of school district, and participation method. For more information and requirements of the pilot, please visit the CDE’s FDP the Unprocessed Fruit and Vegetable Pilot web page.
