Webinar: Growing Through the Taste of CA Challenge

Tuesday, October 13, 2022 at 1 p.m., the California (CA) Local School Wellness Policy (LSWP) Collaborative will discuss how to build resilience in School Nutrition Programs. Join us to learn more about how the Team Nutrition (TN) Taste of CA Standardized Recipe Challenge Ambassadors created recipes using local ingredients and cultural flavor profiles. During this webinar, Ambassadors will share how they collaborated with their school communities in the recipe development process, and elevated school nutrition staff through training and professional development despite the challenges of a global pandemic.

In 2020, the U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded the California Department of Education (CDE) TN Training Grant for School Meal Recipe Development to administer the Taste of CA Standardized Recipe Challenge. The CDE awarded subgrants to 17 local educational agencies to develop standardized recipes using locally sourced ingredients. The grant also included awards to four ambassador school districts that provide leadership in the recipe development process and professional development support to the grantees. To learn more, visit the CDE Taste of CA Standardized Recipe Challenge Grant web page.

  • Describe the TN Taste of CA Standardized Recipe Challenge Grant and the role of the Ambassadors
  • Describe how the grantees developed standardized recipes using local ingredients
  • Identify successful strategies for engaging students and the school community in the process of developing standardized recipes for school meals
  • Discuss some of the unexpected benefits that occurred because of the COVID-19 pandemic
