State Superintendent Tony Thurmond Announces 2022 California Classified School Employees of the Year
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond yesterday honored nine outstanding classified school employees for their dedication to California’s public-school students. Two of the nine winners will be nominated for the Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE) Award, a national honor which will be announced by the US Department of Education in 2023. State Superintendent Thurmond-Sponsored Bills on Mental Health and Improving Equitable Outcomes Progress Toward Becoming Law
Several bills sponsored by State Superintendent Thurmond are on their way to becoming law. One of those key pieces of legislation is Senate Bill 1229, authored by Senator Mike McGuire (D-North Coast). Last week, Thurmond testified in support of the bill, which will add 10,000 mental health clinicians to support schools and youth throughout the state. “Given the struggles students have faced during the pandemic, I believe that this could be one of the most important bills that we act on this year. At this time, addressing the social–emotional needs of our students is job number one,” said Thurmond. Meeting of All CA School Districts: Building the Plan to Ensure all Students Learn to Read by Third Grade (May 20)
As part of his literacy efforts, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond is inviting all school districts and staff engaged for the in literacy efforts to an all-district virtual meeting on Friday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to noon, to discuss statewide efforts to ensure all students learn to read by third grade by the year 2026. State Superintendent Thurmond Joins 2022 California Youth Voter SummitState Superintendent Thurmond today joins California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., and the Students Vote Project for the 2022 California Youth Voter Summit. This virtual informational event focuses on the importance of civic engagement and voting, AB 963 (the Student Civic and Voter Empowerment Act), how to create an effective action plan, and other critical skills pertinent to the implementation of AB 963. Medi-Cal Billing Specialist Project RFA
The California Department of Education (CDE) Whole Child Division is pleased to announce that the Request for Applications (RFA) for the LEA Medi-Cal Billing Specialist project will be available next week.
The lead LEA partner, or consortium, will assist and support other LEAs statewide in securing federal reimbursement through the Medi-Cal Billing Option Program (LEA BOP) for services provided to Medi-Cal enrolled students under the age of twenty-two. The grant period is June 25, 2022 through June 30, 2026 and funds are dependent upon approval of the CDE. The total for all five years must not exceed $1,250,000 over the life of the grant. May is Mental Health Awareness MonthThe CDE and California Health and Human Services (CHHS) Agency partnered to highlight Mental Health Awareness Month and Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week, which is taking place May 1–7, 2022. Resources for school communities are available on the California Health and Human Services Agency Mental Health Resources for Youth website . Both agencies are working together to bring more counselors and funding to schools in order to support the mental health needs of students. Early Education Teacher Development (EETD) Grant RFA (Due May 13)
The EETD grant provides funding on a competitive basis to local educational agencies to identify, recruit, and retain a robust early education workforce and increase specific competencies for early educators. The request for applications (RFA) is due by Friday, May 13. Medical Therapy Program Webinar (May 10)
The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and CDE invite education partners to learn about the California Children’s Services (CCS) Medical Therapy Program (MTP) . The program provides medically necessary physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medical therapy conference services to children and young adults who have disabling conditions, generally due to neurological or musculoskeletal disorders. Universal Prekindergarten Office Hours (May 11)
The Early Education Division is excited to host weekly Universal Prekindergarten (UPK) Office Hours. The division will host virtual office hours on Wednesday afternoons targeted for school districts, charter schools, and county offices of education. School Lunch Hero Day is a day when schools and community members can show their appreciation for the valuable and important contributions that school nutrition professionals offer every school day to provide nutritious meals to California’s students and to promote healthy eating and well-being. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
The CDE celebrates May as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month as part of ongoing efforts to acknowledge, recognize, and honor the diverse histories and backgrounds of California students, staff, and families! This year, the CDE AAPI Heritage Month Committee is focusing on the theme of “Resilience and Recovery.” Stay tuned for information on a planned mental health roundtable and other events, and social media content centered on the AAPI community.
National School Nurse Day (May 11)
The CDE encourages you to recognize May 11 as National School Nurse Day to honor and celebrate more than 95,000 school nurses across the US who make a difference in the lives of our students every day. School nurses ensure our children and young adults are safe, active, and are ready to learn in the classroom. Thank you to all our school nurses for all you do!
Classified School Employee Week (May 15–21)
The CDE encourages you to recognize May 15–21 as Classified School Employee Week. This week, California salutes the important contributions of classified school employees and this year’s theme is “We are Classified! We Bring it Every Day!” Thank you to all our classified school employees who go above and beyond to make sure our school campuses operate smoothly and support students either behind the scenes or in the classroom. National Speech Pathologist Day (May 18)
The CDE encourages you to annually recognize May 18 as National Speech Pathologist Day. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) study, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders. The CDE recognizes our SLPs who offer a wide range of services for students of all ages.
Memorial Day (May 30)The CDE will be closed on Monday, May 30, as Memorial Day is a public school and state holiday. We honor the many fallen US soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our country over the years.
